Haunted Main Kitchen

One morning, while waiting in line to get my breakfast, I started talking to one of the kitchen workers about ghosts. I asked her if she had ever seen anything unusual during her employment there at Broughton Hospital‟s Main Kitchen.

She was glad to relate this tale to me as a true story that happened to her early one morning. She said that she used to come in early on her shift and do some extra work that would be needed during the day. One morning, while she was all alone in the main kitchen, she heard someone call her name.

She said she stopped what she was doing and left that kitchen, right then and there. She went outside and sat on the bench nearby until the rest of the crew showed up. When they asked her why she wasn‟t inside the kitchen, she told them what happened. The people she worked with stood there and laughed at her.

But later that day, a coworker took her aside and told her that she too had seen some weird things happen down there in the kitchen, and heard some strange noises as well. Nobody had ever called her name though, but she assured her friend that if they had, she would have done the same thing.

When the kitchen worker was finished telling me what happened to her, she assured me that she no longer went into work earlier than her coworkers any more. And she would NEVER be caught by herself alone in that kitchen again.

Another female employee who worked in the dining room told me this story. She said that she used to work through her break, between the morning and afternoon shifts, to make a little overtime and get ahead on the afternoon job. She said that she was hard at work out in the dining area, cleaning tables and wiping down chairs, when she started hearing the sound of a piano playing. She also heard doors opening and shutting.

She said she became so frightened, that she had to stop what she was doing. She decided to sit outside at the smoke shack until 4 o‟clock came and her regular shift began. She had other employees to keep her safe then.

Staff Dining Room (Old Main Kitchen)

It is also interesting to note that the old Main Kitchen building (pictured above) is also known as the Clark Building. There is a historical marker between the two front doors that reads:

Clark Building

“Built in 1900‟s. Named in 1992 for Katie C. Clark in honor of her 27 years of service to Nutritional Services. From 1900 to 1952, this building housed the hospital Main Kitchen. When the Hooper Building opened in 1952, the main kitchen/warehouse (which was located where the Jones Building now stands) were moved to that location, and Clark Building became the employees cafeteria. Prior to the opening of Clark Building, the main kitchen was located in the basement of the Avery Building and employees cafeteria was on the 1st floor of the Avery Building.
